Housing Access Voucher Program
Memorandum of Support
Re: S72 Kavanagh / A1704 Rosenthal
Relates to establishing the housing access voucher program
The above-referenced legislation would direct the commissioner of the division of housing and community renewal to implement a program of rental assistance in the form of housing vouchers for those who are homeless or facing imminent loss of housing. The New York State Catholic Conference supports this compassionate and commonsense initiative.
Too many New Yorkers are struggling to make ends meet, and many must make difficult decisions when it comes to taking care of their families. Those that are behind on their rent might be forced to choose between paying or buying food, medicine, or other necessities. We must do more to support families facing housing insecurity and homelessness. A stable home is critical to ensuring good, healthy outcomes for adults and children.
This proposed voucher program would provide direct assistance to families making 50% or less than the area median income, and who are homeless or facing imminent loss of housing. The benefit would be portable throughout New York State and apply regardless of immigration status. This legislation is offering a lifeline that will help families to navigate difficult situations and transition out of shelters and into stable housing.
The housing crisis has been devastating for low-income and vulnerable New Yorkers. Guaranteeing the dignity of a stable home is a critical step toward lifting families out of poverty. We urge you to support this bill.
