MEMORANDUM OF SUPPORT

A2425 Paulin / S5737 Scarcella-Spanton
Increases the time frame for payments of certain expenses by adoptive parents

The above-referenced legislation would increase the time frame for payments of certain expenses by adoptive parents to 180 days prior to birth and 45 days after birth. The New York State Catholic Conference welcomes this refreshing proposal and urges its passage.

Adoption is a beautiful gift. Through adoption, babies are given a chance at life with parents who desperately want a family. Moms who choose adoption are strong, brave women who deserve support. Housing, maternity clothes, transportation to medical appointments and baby supplies can be burdensome costs for struggling birth moms. Providing more flexibility for adoptive families to help with these expenses during pregnancy and after birth is a wonderful way to promote positive outcomes for everyone involved in the process.

New York spends millions of dollars a year on the practice and promotion of abortion, leaving women to feel that they have no other options. We must do more to support women by ensuring that adoption is a true choice. Giving adoptive families that ability to help birth moms along the way is a good start. We urge you to pass this bill.
