The “Second Look Act”
Authorizes certain persons confined in institutions operated by the department of corrections and community supervision to apply for a sentence reduction
The above-referenced legislation, known as the Second Look Act, would authorize certain incarcerated individuals to apply for a sentence reduction. The New York State Catholic Conference supports this important legislation.
Harsh and lengthy prison sentences leave no room for the good work of redemption undertaken by many incarcerated individuals. Correctional facilities today offer many programs, supports and opportunities for the incarcerated to turn their lives around. Too many individuals have done this work, yet they have languished in prison for years. Through forgiveness and the beauty of a second chance, these children of God could begin their lives again. Giving judges the discretion to reduce the sentences of these individuals would allow that to happen.
True justice includes the rehabilitation of those who have made mistakes. This bill is a reasonable way to provide that justice, and we urge its passage.
